The difference between a trader and a gambler is a plan. Here's how to build one.
Why You Need a Trading Plan
Without a Plan
With a Plan
Trading Plan Template
1. Trading Goals
Financial Goals (Specific, Measurable):Short-term (3 months): Grow $10K → $12K (+20%)
Medium-term (1 year): $10K → $20K (+100%)
Long-term (3 years): $10K → $50K (+400%)
Performance Goals:
Win rate: >50%
Risk/reward: >2:1
Max drawdown: <20%
Max daily loss: 3%
Personal Goals:
Trade without emotion
Stick to the plan every day
Journal every trade
Review performance weekly
2. Market Selection
Assets I Trade:Primary: BTC, ETH (80% of capital)
Secondary: SOL, AVAX, ARB (15%)
Stablecoins: USDC (5% cash reserve)
Assets I Avoid:
Memecoins (too volatile)
Tokens <$100M market cap (low liquidity)
Leverage >5x (risk of liquidation)
Anything I don't understand
Trading Venues:
Primary: Binance (lowest fees, most liquid)
Backup: ByBit (if Binance down)
DEX: Uniswap (for new launches only)
3. Trading Strategy
My Edge:Trend-following on 4H timeframe
Buy pullbacks to EMA21 in uptrends
Confirm with RSI >40 and volume increase
Risk 2%, target 2:1, trailing stop at 3R
See our strategy guides.
Setup Criteria (Checklist):Wait for 4H candle close above EMA21
Enter on next candle open
Set stop 2 ATR below entry
Set TP1 at 2R, TP2 at 3R
Exit Rules:
Stop loss: 2 ATR or below recent swing low
Take profit: 50% at 2R, 50% trailing stop
Time stop: Close if no 5% move in 5 days
4. Risk Management
Position Sizing:Risk per trade: 2% of capital
Example: $10K account → $200 max loss/trade
If stop is 5% away → position size = $4,000 (20% of capital)
If stop is 10% away → position size = $2,000 (10% of capital)
See our position sizing guide.
Risk Limits:Max open positions: 3
Max daily loss: 3% ($300)
Max weekly loss: 6% ($600)
Max monthly loss: 12% ($1,200)
If any limit hit → stop trading, review what went wrong
Drawdown Management:
Account down 10% → reduce size to 1.5% risk/trade
Account down 20% → reduce size to 1% risk/trade
Account down 30% → stop trading, reassess strategy
5. Daily Routine

6. Weekly Review

7. Mistakes to Avoid
My Personal Red Flags:❌ Trading when tired or emotional
❌ Increasing size after wins (revenge trading)
❌ Moving stop losses (hoping for reversal)
❌ Entering without clear R:R >2:1
❌ Checking portfolio every 5 minutes (anxiety trading)
❌ Taking setups that don't match criteria
If I Break a Rule:
1. Close the position immediately
Take a 24-hour break
Journal what happened
Review the plan
Only resume after understanding the mistake

FAQ
How detailed should my trading plan be?
As detailed as needed to remove decisions during trading. If you find yourself asking "what should I do?" mid-trade, your plan isn't detailed enough. Include checklists, exact entry/exit rules, and contingency plans for every scenario.Should I follow the plan 100% of the time?
Yes. The only exception is systematic improvement — if you identify a flaw through backtesting or review, update the plan, then follow the new version 100%. Never deviate in real-time based on "gut feeling."How often should I update my trading plan?
Monthly for minor tweaks (watchlist, position size), quarterly for major revisions (new strategy, different timeframe). Never change mid-trade or mid-week.
