Market Structure Analysis: Read the Trend Like a Professional

Market structure is the backbone of price action trading. Before you look at any indicator, understand the structure: Is price making higher highs and higher lows (uptrend) or lower highs and lower lows (downtrend)?

The Basics

Uptrend Structure

• Higher Highs (HH): Each peak is higher than the last

• Higher Lows (HL): Each pullback bottom is higher than the last

• As long as HH + HL continue, the uptrend is intact

Downtrend Structure

• Lower Highs (LH): Each peak is lower than the last

• Lower Lows (LL): Each bottom is lower than the last

• As long as LH + LL continue, the downtrend is intact

Range/Consolidation

• Equal highs and equal lows

• No clear directional structure

• Wait for a break before trading directionally

Key Concepts

Break of Structure (BOS)

Price breaks beyond the last significant high (uptrend) or low (downtrend), continuing the trend.

Uptrend BOS: Price breaks above the last HH → Trend continues → Look for buy on pullback
Downtrend BOS: Price breaks below the last LL → Trend continues → Look for sell on pullback

Change of Character (CHoCH)

Price breaks structure in the opposite direction, signaling potential trend change.

Uptrend CHoCH: Price breaks below the last HL → Trend may be reversing to downtrend
Downtrend CHoCH: Price breaks above the last LH → Trend may be reversing to uptrend

Order Blocks

The last candlestick before a strong move. These areas act as supply (resistance) or demand (support) zones where institutional orders were placed.

Enter in trend direction on confirmation
